How a Site and Soil Evaluation Works

A Site and Soil Evaluation (SSE) determines whether a property can safely manage water with an onsite sewage system or septic tank. It considers conditions like soil type, groundwater composition and nearby water to ensure installation and disposal practices will not harm public health or the environment.

At WSW, our consultants conduct SSEs like this:

+ Review property information and local government data

+ Conduct an onsite inspection and send samples for laboratory testing

+ Assess drainage conditions

+ Provide a report detailing the suitability of your preferred system and recommendations for treatment and disposal practices

If you are removing a septic system, our investigations will identify any contamination caused by the old system and recommend an appropriate remediation plan.

Why Choose West Soil & Water?

We Know WA

We’re an independent consultancy with over a decade of experience in contamination investigations. Operating solely in WA, WSW has an unparalleled knowledge of our states regulatory and environmental landscapes.

Smooth Transition into Remediation

If conducted after a septic tank is removed, your investigation may reveal contamination challenges in soil or groundwater. WSW can address those issues with a remediation plan to reduce environmental and human risk and maintain compliance.

Benefit from a Wider Investigation

Septic systems aren’t the only health and compliance risk on your property. WSW can incorporate your SSE into a wider Preliminary or Detailed Site Investigation, looking into asbestos, acid sulfate soils and other parameters.

FAQs

Do I need a Site and Soil Evaluation before installing a septic tank?
If you’re in regional Perth or rural WA, an SSE is required before installing your septic system. The requirement is often imposed at local government level to confirm that wastewater can be safely managed on the property and that the system meets regulations.

WSW consultants usually complete an SSE in a single visit. Samples will be sent to a NATA accredited laboratory for analysis and our team will review the results. We will then send you a report detailing soil conditions and our recommendations.

Most evaluations are finalised within a few weeks.

If you are considering installing a septic system, you must account for:

+ Soil permeability
+ Groundwater depth
+ Site slope
+ Available land area
+ Proximity to waterways

An SSE will assess these conditions and determine whether your chosen system can safely operate on your property.
